4 Reasons to Call Pipecraft Plumbing in Arvada for Rinnai Tankless Water Heater Installation, Maintenance, or Repair

It’s all about science! In Colorado, a 199k BTU tankless water heater can produce approximately 5-5.5 gallons of hot water per minute (GPM), equivalent to two simultaneous showers and a sink. However, in Miami, Corpus Christi, and San Diego, the same 199k BTU unit can deliver 8.8 GPM, enough hot water for seven simultaneous showers. Why the difference? The variation in GPM is related to the amount of energy required to heat the water. In Colorado, the water temperature needs to rise by 60-70 degrees, whereas in Texas, California, and Florida, the water temperature only needs to increase by 30-40 degrees.

Tankless Water Heaters are sized based on flow rate (GPM) rather than tank capacity. Flow rate is determined by BTU – this is seriously impacted by altitude. In Colorado, we recommend 199k BTU tankless water heaters for most applications and 180k BTU for very low demand and small households (1-2 people). The flow rate required increases with the number of users and their simultaneous hot water demands. Larger households may need multiple units to ensure adequate hot water supply during peak usage.
